Iskandar Malaysia’s unique Start Up Ecosystem aims to be the catalyst of technological growth within the Southern Region.
Iskandar Puteri’s premier tech event, IP SMART 2018: CREATE returned for another weekend of innovation and creativity, targeting industry players and stakeholders in the Iskandar Malaysia region. The event is the first of its kind in the startup industry in Johor.
Over 400 innovators, entrepreneurs, developers, designers as well as investors took part in a list of activities which was held on 17 to 19 August 2018. Organised by StartUp Johor, the three-day festival took place at the CIMB Leadership Academy in Medini, Iskandar Puteri.
Among the most participated programmes are the Junior Makers Programme where children aged 7 to 12 had the chance to learn the values of craftsmanship, sharing and applied learning in science, technology and engineering and an exclusive workshop for women entrepreneurs that coached them to improve their business and thereafter, create the necessary impact in their circle of influence.
Other activities included several masterclass workshops, networking sessions and Iskandar Puteri’s first hackathon, where participants spent 30 gruelling hours on building and pitching their ideas in front of a panel of judges for validation with a prize pool of RM20,000, making it the best way to launch a startup.
Johor International Trade, Investment and Utility Committee Chairman, YB Jimmy Puah Wee Tse was also present at the closing ceremony and honoured as one of the judges at the hackathon finals.
“We, the new government cannot rely on the traditional and conventional way of attracting investment into the state. As this event is in line with the 3H - High Tech, High Value and Halal, it would be a huge waste not to explore it,” said Puah.
He added the results of the hackathon would benefit Johor that has the land, infrastructure and talent to be developed, and now on a new high to pursue success in the tech industry.
